Nov 27, 1931 — Aug 13, 2024
Fowler
FOWLER – Joan Harris 92 of rural Fowler, Ks passed away August 13, 2024 at Meade District Hospital. Born November 27, 1931 to Ralph Raymond and Anna Juanita (Rathbun) Middleswart in Fowler. When she was five years old her father Raymond was killed in an swimming accident at the Fowler pool. She was the oldest of four children. As a young girl, she attended the Fowler Schools graduating from Fowler High School in 1950 as a proud Fowler Goldbug.
The town of Fowler was a great source of support for this family. They lived in the back of the telephone office for many years. That's when Joan took a liking to Bill and would listen in on his conversations that he made from the pay phone across the street!
On August 17, 1950, she married George William (Bill) Harris at Fowler. She spent the next 74 years as a loving wife. Family was her life. Mother of four, grandmother of 10, great- grandmother of 15, and was expecting a first great-great-grandchild in October. She was the #1 fan at all of her children's activities and later on her grandchildren's. She enjoyed traveling to Garden City and Greeley, Colorado to watch Dan play football for the Broncos and the Bears and to Lawrence to watch David play football for the KU Jayhawks.
Joan was a member of the United Methodist Church of Fowler, serving the church in many different areas. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, Swedish weaving, making Christmas stockings, reading, working in her flower bed, mowing, square dancing and jitter bugging. She was an avid KU basketball fan and had to have a bracket in her lap during March Madness. Dancing With The Stars was watched and she controlled the remote and no phone calls were accepted at that time.
She is survived by her husband Bill; daughters Dana Wurdeman and husband Tom of Overbrook, Kansas, DeAnn Eddy and husband Randy of Cedar Vale, Kansas; a son David and wife Lori of Newton, Kansas; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Harris of rural Fowler; grandchildren Gabe, Greg, Garrett, Grant, Briana, Kristin, Jared, Hali, Chelsea, and Zac; 15 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her son George Daniel(Danny) Harris; a granddaughter Leslie Wurdeman Riner; her parents; a brother, Jake Middleswart; and two sisters, Joyce Eck and Jean Tipton.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held at the Fowler Friends Church at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 5, 2024. In accordance to her request, cremation has taken place. Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade, has been entrusted with these arrangements.
The family would welcome memorials to the Fowler Fire Department, Fowler Library or the charity of the donor's choice.
