Obituary

Elizabeth Wiens, 100 years loved, passed away Sunday morning, August 17, 2025, at her home in Meade, Kansas.

The sixth of eight children, Elizabeth was born to John P. and Agnes (Neufeld) Ediger in Meade, Kansas on July 21, 1925.  As a young girl, she attended the Pleasant Hill one-room country school and the Meade Bible Academy, both south of Meade.  Well into her adulthood and while her children were in school, she desired a high school diploma and studied to receive her GED.

Elizabeth understood her need for a Savior at a very young age and gave her life to Jesus.  Throughout her 100 years on earth, God faithfully walked her through the favorable times of life and the difficult times and showed His goodness to her in many ways.  She was a longtime member of the Countryside Bible Church.  She loved her church family deeply and they loved her well in return, especially in her elderly years.

During her Meade Bible Academy days, Elizabeth struck up a friendship with Elmer Wiens which later led to their marriage on December 26, 1943.  To their union three daughters were added:  Maralee, Peggy, and Debby.  Without any sons, Elizabeth and the girls all became the farm hands Elmer needed to get the work done on the farm.  Elmer and Elizabeth enjoyed traveling and went on many trips together with the family and with friends.  Elizabeth also enjoyed serving her church early on as a pianist, S.S. teacher, and camp cook.

Elizabeth stuck close by her husband's side while he encountered many hospital stays and surgeries due to a rare congenital heart defect known as Transposition of the Great Arteries.  After 44 years of marriage, Elmer passed away on January 21, 1988.

Even though a long life of widowhood was not something she desired, obviously, Elizabeth embraced that stage of life with much courage and strove to live her widow years with purpose and joy.  She took great interest in others and chose to be an encourager to all who she visited with.  Her grandchildren fondly remember when they were little each taking turns spending the night at her house following AWANA on Wednesday nights.  In the morning she would treat them to donuts and take them to school.  This continued until they all were through junior high.

Elizabeth was a member of the Live and Learn EHU.  She also got a lot of joy out of volunteering and did so for the Et Cetera Shop in Liberal, the Beam Senior Center, and on a couple of occasions, together with Rosella Ediger, she spoiled the Teens Living for Christ youth group with some great meals while on summer work retreats.  Even over the last few weeks, Elizabeth could be found bundling Operation Christmas Child items and she also faithfully folded the church bulletins each week up until three days prior to her passing.

Elizabeth was always up for playing games and if you ever played with her, you know she was competitive and didn't give her opponents any slack. Her sharp mind and great sense of humor were a huge blessing to those who loved her.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; son-in-law Phil Bartel, great-granddaughter Dezzie Friesen, great-grandson Eli Davis; her parents, only sister Marie Rempel, brothers John N. Ediger, Hank Ediger, Martin Ediger, Abe Ediger, Benny Ediger, and Frank Ediger.

She is survived by her children: Maralee Bartel, Peggy (Lyle) Friesen, Debby (Leo) Reimer; 9 grandchildren: Alisha (Nathan) James, Laureen Bartel, Tanya (Michael) Davis, Brandon (Kasey) Friesen, Jaden (Jen) Friesen, Tinese (Josh) Grisanti, Britney (Ransom) Wentworth, Blake (Rachel) Reimer, and Brooke Reimer; 20 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way:  Mary James, Jonathan James, Jemimah James, Anna James, Isaac Bowen, Ainsley Davis, Kylin Friesen, Kadon Friesen, Knox Friesen, Kenna Friesen, Ayton Friesen, Brylee Friesen, Clay Friesen, Emry Friesen, Levi Grisanti, Zadie Grisanti, Brooklyn Grisanti, Boaz Wentworth, Ember Wentworth, and Quincy Reimer; sister-in-laws Helen Ediger and Helen Ann Friesen; many special nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held at Countryside Bible Church on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.  Interment will be held prior to the service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Countryside Bible Church cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade and from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the Countryside Bible Church Fellowship Hall.  Elizabeth always enjoyed reunions and a good party, so in honor of her finally being reunited with her Savior and loved ones who have passed before, the family invites you to wear bright colors to her memorial service.  After the service, the family welcomes everyone to stay for a light faspa meal.

The family welcomes memorials to Countryside Bible Church, Teens Living for Christ, or Operation Christmas Child in care of the funeral home.
